For decades, metal braces were the only option for children and adults in need of orthodontic treatment. While newer options like clear braces or Invisalign are great options for many people, metal braces are still very popular among our teen patients. Learn more about the process and timeline you can expect if you or a family member needs metal braces.
Why Choose Metal Braces?
Today’s metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before. Metal braces are glued on to the teeth and wires are used to gently move the teeth into alignment.
Additionally, our kid patients love to place the color ties over the braces. We have tons of different colors to choose from, and this allows kids to have some fun and express themselves with their braces. The colors are actually little rubber ties that hold the wire to the brackets. These are changed every visit, so your child can choose different colors, same color, or multiple colors every visit.
Metal braces are also typically less expensive than most other options.

The Process
If you opt for metal braces, you can expect to visit the orthodontist several times.

First Consultation
The first visit is a consultation. You will have x-rays, photos, and a digital scan of your teeth taken. Dr. Rosenberg will then review these records and recommend a course of treatment. During this time he will also review all treatment options for metal braces versus other options like clear braces or Invisalign. Additionally, there is no charge for your initial consultation, as well as no charge for any initial records that need to be taken.
Your Braces Are Placed
If you choose metal or clear braces, we can sometimes start treatment that day if you are ready and want to get started. Otherwise, your next appointment will be to have your braces placed. This is the longest appointment you will have.
After placing the braces, Dr. Rosenberg will then run the "archwire"—the metal band that connects each bracket—through the brackets.
We will hold your hand throughout this entire process. We will explain each step of what we are doing before we do it and will always make sure you or your child are comfortable. After placement, we will review in-depth how to take care of your braces.

Timeline
There's no "right" length of time for orthodontic treatment—the amount of time you'll need to wear your braces will depend on your dental goals and your treatment plan. This varies from patient to patient. Treatment time can be as little as 4-6 months for limited treatment and as long as 18-24 months for most comprehensive treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Rosenberg will give you an estimate of how long your treatment will take.
Typically with braces, Dr. Rosenberg will see you every 6-8 weeks for adjustment visits. When your smile and bite are perfect, your braces will be removed. You may be fitted for a retainer to help your smile stay beautiful forever… and your experience at SMILE EXPERIENCE ORTHODONTICS will be complete.
