In the past, it may have seemed like braces were something reserved only for children and teenagers. Today, however, braces for adults are more common than ever before. If you are an adult with orthodontic concerns, you may wonder whether braces are the right option for you. Below is some information to help you decide.

Types of Braces for Adults

Several different types of braces for adults are available, offering plenty of options for patients. Some of these options include:

  • Traditional metal braces – Traditional metal braces can be used to treat virtually any orthodontic problem. They include metal wires that are cemented to the front of teeth.
  • Clear/ceramic braces – If you are concerned about the appearance of metal braces, you may benefit from conventional clear braces. The structure of conventional clear braces is similar to metal braces, but the wires used are tooth-colored or clear and made of ceramic instead of metal.
  • Lingual braces – Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces, but they are cemented to the backside of teeth instead of to the front. This makes them less visible to others. However, this option tends to be more expensive than traditional braces.
  • Clear aligners – Clear aligners are clear trays that are removable and used to move your teeth over time. They should remain in your mouth all day, with the exception of eating and cleaning your teeth. The trays will be switched out on a regular basis to ensure that the teeth continue moving into the desired positions. Although clear aligners are hard to see, they are not invisible.
